Dog! Getting Fit With Man’s Best Friend!

It’s no secret that dog owners enjoy better fitness. A study conducted by the University of Western Australia found that hound owners are seven times more likely to achieve the recommended level of exercise a week than non-dog owners – on average up to 55 minutes a week. Patrick credits his English staffie with being an integral part of his fitness regimen early on. Milli, who had been “getting quite chubby”, became Patrick’s sprinting partner. “It’s great for me because I egg her on and she runs faster, creating the need for me to chase her harder,” he says, “and it’s great for her because she gets the much-needed exercise.” Owning a pooch has also been associated with stress reduction, lower blood pressure and cholesterol – and let’s be honest, a cute mutt can be a chick magnet, so it’s a win-win situation.
